I think the post still has merit with values changed, although probably not at the top of the to-do list in implementation with proper configuration.) Without FAST search you still have all of the refiners shown on your SharePoint search but they aren’t real
However 2010 wasn’t mature enough to bake the sweeping gains of FAST Search into the product

Searches done with the embedded FAST search engine (I will say the inclusion of FAST search in all versions is a nice improvement in SharePoint 2013) will likely result in extraneous content

Hosted platforms move the back-end cost out of your organization, but you will still require some expertise in architecting and managing your environment, making sure you're getting the most value out of the platform for your team
Microsoft understood the search requirement when it acquired FAST Search in 2008. Microsoft built upon the technology for its 2010 and 2013 releases to develop a new family of search-based capabilities, such as Delve and Clutter, available through SharePoint Online (as part of Office 365)
However, unlike traditional search which only shows topics based on popularity, SharePoint FAST search allows me to sort data by date released, content type, author, or even sites on a particular topic
Fully integrated FAST search means that end users can also search for documents, preview documents in the search results without opening the item, and share specific documents with others in their peer group
